A denture is a removable device with teeth made of porcelain or resin, that can be placed inside the mouth to replace a single tooth or several missing teeth. Dentures can be made as partial or as full dentures, depending on the need. A partial denture will fit in between existing teeth. For instance let’s say you have 2 missing teeth due to some accident. A partial denture of 2 teeth can be fixed in this gap. Similarly a full denture can be made, which will effectively replace all the teeth on your jaw.
Full dentures can be made for both upper and lower jaws. Dentures are durable and can be fixed if broken.
A denture can be made using materials such as porcelain and acrylic resin. The base of the denture is made of acrylic resin and chrome cobalt metal. These options are hard and can break under pressure. Another option is the flexible denture which is made from a type of nylon and does not break easily.
The appropriate denture type is decided based on the current condition of your jaw and teeth. Your dentist will then make several impressions of your jaw using a mold. Along with this mold, other factors such as the position of the upper and lower jaws are also noted.
Using the mold a model denture is created and is used as a temporary device to make any necessary adjustments. Once this model is confirmed, a final denture is cast. The final denture is then fitted and minor adjustments are made to ensure a perfect fit.
This process will require multiple visits with your dentist.
Flexible dentures are made using a thin thermoplastic material like nylon. Besides that flexibility these dentures are more comfortable because they don’t require metal clasps to hold them in place. They are also very light and feel less bulky when compared to the regular acrylic dentures.
